Help…What is ADHD?

  • There are three types of ADHD
  • ADHD impacts the part of the brain that influences executive functioning
  • It can affect school, work, family, friendships, and self-esteem

The three types of ADHD are attention deficit hyperactivity disorder:

  • combined presentation
  • predominantly inattentive presentation
  • predominantly hyperactive/impulsive presentation

ADHD impairs executive functions, meaning the farther away the reward for something or behavior, the greater the difficulty an adult has performing the necessary steps in the here and now. In plain words, it is how efficiently you decide what to do.

Executive functions are a set of skills that include planning and meeting goals, self-control (personality development), following multiple-step directions even when interrupted, and staying focused despite distraction. As you can see in this picture, EF it is located in the front of the brain.

Now that you know a little bit about ADHD, you can help manage it by:

  • Exercising everyday
  • Accept yourself and your limitations
  • Create a system that works for you
  • Organize yourself and your home
    • Start with one task at a time

  • Minimize distractions
  • Know and respect your limits “Don’t overextend yourself”
